Apple Computers

The first Apple Computer Company logo pictured an illustration of Issac Newton sitting under a tree right.  Legend has it that an apple falling on his head inspired him to discover the laws of gravity and the basic laws of physics.  Much of Apple's business plan involves "enlightenment" and "style," a trend that Apple has retained for as long as Steve Job's control. Because the Newton Logo doesn't reinforce the idea of personal computers, and it was costly to print, the technicolour apple logo was instated and kept.  Also, the coloured apple logo follows design trends of the late 80's. When Steve Jobs returned to Apple in 1998 the first thing to change was the logo.  The current logo was created to look slick and futuristic.  It is also easy to recolour for personalization and identification of OSX versions.

Xerox

In 1906 the Haloid company was founded and manufactured photographic paper and equipment.  When electro-photography (xerography) was invented, the company changed name to Xerox and Haloid Xerox to push the idea of the copy machine.  The strong "X" of the 1948 and 1949 logos became a staple for 10 years of the company's history.  In 1958 they had a throw back to the old "Harold" logo by officially having the logo read "Haloid Xerox ."  In 1962 the Haloid was dropped and 7 years later the word "corporation" was dropped.  This was to usher in the new wave of laser printing that was invented by Gary Starkweather by modifying a Xerox copier.  In the 1990's the company revamped it's entire line and focused on supplying all a user's document needs by proudly proclaiming "The Document Company" in a very professional letter head style logo.  Much like the word "corporation" was phased out between 1961 and 1968, "

IBM

IBM had a drastic change in its logo design through the years.   Originally IBM was known as ITRCO (International Time Recording Company) and had a five letter logo with a hierarchy that caused to viewer to read the letters in the correct order.   After incorporating the Computing Scale Company to produce commercial scales, the company changed its logo.   Unlike the previous design, the first letter is difficult to distinguish as the “C” encompasses the entire logo.   When the two companies completely merged under one board to form the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company (CTR), a combination logo was created.   Although it still has elements of the CSCO logo (the pointed letters and the font curvature) the main layout was taken from the of the ITRCO logo.   The first actual IBM logo appeared in 1924 when the company’s name was officially changed to Business International Machines.   Because of the “international” nature of their sales, their logo is representational of a globe.   T
