PLEASE HELP NOW!

I just got a ton of old books from the late 1800s early 1900s.  Most are small pocket sized text books. Pg 83 of New Elementary Algebra; Containing the Rudiments of Science (1872) had this cut out and inserted into it.

Any ideas on what the symbol's for?  I have no idea.
